Have you ever been interested in replacing a missing tooth (or teeth) or getting an implanted denture? Getting dental implants in reality is a pretty simple process. Of course, with all things that you have yet to experience, it’s usually the anticipation of the unknown that can make you feel nervous. Dental implants have transformed the lives of many patients who need one or more teeth replaced. They are now more confident in their smile and are able to eat whatever they like. Patients who have been living with dentures are delighted to no longer have to live every day with their teeth wobbling or floating around in their mouths.
The dental implant process has a few stages to it. First, we will schedule a consultation with you. At this appointment, we will take a 3D image allowing our doctor to do a thorough examination of your jawbone to ensure you are a good candidate for dental implants and/or an implanted denture. If your jawbone has degenerated it won’t be able to support the implants. The good news is there are ways to regenerate the bone! Using what’s called a bone graft and in some cases, a technique called a sinus lift could be required to prep the site for success. This would be gone over at the consultation appointment so you are aware of what is needed.
The second stage will be scheduling the procedure itself. Many people worry that this will be painful, but, with fewer nerves in the jawbone, a local anesthetic is ample to numb the site. If the thought of getting a dental implant makes you have anxiety, you’re not alone! You may want oral or intravenous sedation to help you relax and remain comfortable during the procedure. If this is something you would be interested in just let the office know in advance so we can make the proper arrangements for your appointment.
After the surgery is completed, you will then go into a healing phase. This can vary in time and will be up to the doctor’s discretion. Typically, you will need to allow 3-6 months for the implant to fuse with your jawbone. Once healed we can then scan that area for your permanent restoration whether that be a crown, bridge, or full denture.
Once your restoration is complete you will need to make sure you stay on top of your at-home care and continue your routine dental checkups to ensure your implants last a lifetime! Call today for your implant consultation, we can be reached at 317-865-1193 today.
